Using Music & Video for Literacy

NPT’s LEARNING TO READ series focuses on family literacy, providing parents and children with skills that can help improve literacy levels in children. Through the experiences of diverse families, the series takes viewers on a journey through wide-ranging aspects of literacy and includes ways to access free books in a community, how to build literacy through everyday activities and more.

Music can be used to help kids master the alphabet, practice the sounds of letters, develop phonemic awareness, and build phonics skills and vocabulary. Using technology teaches kids how to navigate software – even commands as simple as “stop” and “play." Combine these skills by having your child make a recording singing one of their favorite songs; add pictures to make a personal music video.
