Arrival of the First Africans

2019 marks the 400th anniversary of the first representative legislative assembly in the New World. Examine this, and other 1619 events, including the arrival of the first recorded Africans to English North America, the recruitment of significant numbers of English women, the first official English Thanksgiving in North America, and the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of the Virginia Colony.

The first Africans arrived in Virginia when the crew of the “White Lion” traded 20 captives to The Virginia Company for supplies. The Africans were then put to work as farmers and laborers. The legacy of these first Africans cannot be overestimated. Their forced migration began a centuries-long struggle for freedom and equality for minorities in America - issues we are still addressing today.
