2019 marks the 400th anniversary of the first representative legislative assembly in the New World. Examine this, and other 1619 events, including the arrival of the first recorded Africans to English North America, the recruitment of significant numbers of English women, the first official English Thanksgiving in North America, and the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of the Virginia Colony.

Not many English women lived in Jamestown at the founding of the colony. But in 1619, The Virginia Company began looking for more women who were willing to live there so that families could be established and the colony could grow. Though they did not know what to expect, many women risked the journey hoping for new opportunities in Virginia.
