Couwenberg drives Elsie to the kidnap site, so he can explain that Willem is alive and that he did it all for her and her children. Couwenberg implores Elsie to keep quiet until the Royackers' trial is finally over, and she reluctantly agrees. A planted bank points the police further towards Van Layden.
