Three Generations of Volcanoes at Mount Rainier

Geologist Nick Zentner, Senior Geology Lecturer, Central Washington University, leads viewers on adventures through WA's diverse landscapes, from massive lava flows and the planet's biggest Ice Age waterfall to wandering mountains and a flank of Mt. Rainier that traveled to Tacoma. Special thanks to CWU as the original creator and collaborator for Nick on the Rocks.

Three Generations of Volcanoes at Mount Rainier

Season 7 Episode 5 | 8m 5s | CC

The Naches Peak Loop trail is popular for its views of Mount Rainier, but there are more volcanic stories to be found if you know where to look. Rocks just off the trail leave clues to a large volcano out in the Pacific Ocean, and to a newer volcano that sent dikes of magma up through the ancient ocean rock – all before Mount Rainier started to grow.
