Toxic Algae: Complex Sources and Solutions

Season 9 Episode 902 | 27m 13s | CC

Lake Okeechobee was once the blue heart of Florida, pumping fresh water down to the Everglades and beyond. Now that a dike and canal system control its flow, water releases from the lake periodically creating putrid mats of blue green algae. Scientists think water pollution is to blame, and if something isn’t done about it there could be irreparable damage to the environment.

Major funding for this program was provided by the Batchelor Foundation, encouraging people to preserve and protect America’s underwater resources. Additional funding was provided by Diver’s Direct/Emocean Sports, inspiring the pursuit of adventures and watersports; the Do Unto Others Trust, The William J. and Isobel G. Clarke Foundation, Lady Suzanna P. Tweed and Carleton Tweed Charitable Foundation, and by Skip and Diane Day. Distributed by American Public Television.
