Simeon Lee requests that Poirot spend Christmas with him at his home, Gorston Hall, as he believes his life to be in danger. Lee is antagonistic towards his family as he knows their only interest in him is their inheritance. Soon, Simeon is found lying in a pool of blood. A decidedly unfestive Inspector Japp joins Poirot to investigate.
