RMPBS KIDS Connect: Education Indoors & Outdoors in Colorado

When Nature is a Classroom & Classrooms Need Less Distractions

This spring our Rocky Mountain PBS Journalism team covers stories for families about different classrooms from across Colorado. Under a new state law, all Colorado school districts — except non-district charter schools — are required to adopt, implement and publish policies for “communication devices” during the school day before July 1 this year. Schools in Aurora are conducting a trial run of phone-free classrooms. The photo above, by RMPBS journalist Peter Vo, shows one device type used to store student phones; Yondr patches require a magnet to open. Teachers and administrators have access to these magnets throughout the day.

Meanwhile, for an education story of a different flavor, in Colorado Springs a new outdoor classroom at the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center is part of an ongoing city construction project. Located at the base of North Cheyenne Cañon, the park sees nearly 5,000 preschool and K-6 students every year as participants in more than 10 educational programs about nature, wildlife and Ute indigenious heritage.

More for National Poetry Month: Is it Shakespeare or Taylor Swift?

For students in middle or high school, guess whether a line is from Shakespeare or Taylor Swift in this video from the National Theater. Play along with cast members from “Great Performances: Romeo and Juliet” as they’re presented with quotes from the bard of today, or the past. And, browse PBS KIDS “The Best of Shel Silverstein” list for family poetry fun that can include all ages.
