RMPBS KIDS Connect: DYK: Pre-Historic Colorado Was A Dinosaur Highway?
June 1 is National Dinosaur Day!
Though long gone from Earth, Dinosaurs continue to intrigue and delight us today, and Colorado is a premier destination for dinosaur history. So, with Rocky Mountain PBS, catch an episode of “Dinosaur Train” to enjoy imaginary adventures with these creatures – like the Pteranodon family member pictured above – or check out the time we got our claws into the Denver Museum of Nature and Science dino exhibits.
Also available to scratch your dino information itch, is the RMPBS Colorado Experience episode “Dinosaurs,” featuring more about this fascinating part of Colorado history. For example, the first nearly complete Stegosaurus skeleton was found in Cañon City in 1885. It later became our state fossil in 1982 after a successful two-year campaign by fourth-grade students – go kids! You’ll also learn about our state’s various dino fossil hotspots like The Denver Basin, which extends along the Front Range from northern Colorado to Colorado Springs, and the Picket Wire Canyon Trail, located on the Comanche National Grassland south of La Junta, which is the largest known dinosaur track site in North America!
In Season & In Step
Juneteenth Music Festival
As June begins tomorrow, we invite families to join our sister radio station, THE DROP 104.7, while they proudly return as co-presenter of the 15th annual Juneteenth Music Festival in Denver later this month. This festival features a parade, multiple stages of live music, block parties, a youth zone, 100+ vendors, incredible food, and family‑friendly activities in Denver's historic Five Points neighborhood. With the little ones in your life, learn more about this important historic and cultural commemoration with this “Juneteenth | All About the Holidays” video.
Before You Go
Embracing the Arts for Education & Civic Engagement
Immersing children in the various types of art in our world can help them think openly, create new meaning and be more tolerant of others’ differences — all helpful skills to be part of a thriving civic fabric. Music, dance, drama and the visual arts also encourage exploration, self-expression, logical thinking, self-esteem, imagination, and creativity. With this, RMPBS invites you to enjoy these art activity collections with the young children in your life: “Art to Heart” and “Art Activities for Kids.”
Some of the gems you’ll find to watch and play include:
- Exploring Lines: Part 1 | Rosie's Rules | Trouble In Chalktown
- How to Make Sidewalk Chalk
- Molly of Denali | Beading Art
- Rock Art Digital Game | Peg + Cat
- Observing Art: Part 2 | Donkey Hodie
With older students, watch this one-hour special, “Artists Breaking Barriers,” to explore how young artists use their creativity for civic engagement, identity expression, and social change. This documentary features the stories of six exceptional young local artists from across California’s Redwood Coast region whose work challenges societal norms, uplifts marginalized voices, and inspires positive connections in their communities.
