RMPBS KIDS Connect: Civic Learning Week as America Reaches 250 Years!

Civics Entails Much More Than Voting

We invite you to join us in highlighting civic learning as a nationwide priority for sustaining and strengthening our constitutional democracy during Civic Learning Week: March 9–13, 2026! This year, as we observe 250 years since America’s founding, we’re reflecting on the important role of civic learning in the history and development of our nation, while considering the kind of civic learning needed for the next 250 years and beyond.

At RMPBS, we’re working to build community connections and strengthen the civic fabric of Colorado. This spring, the RMPBS statewide civic engagement team is hosting a Community Conversation Series in different areas of the state, for example. Civic education is essential to ensure everyone in America is equipped with the necessary tools to engage as members of our self-governing society.

While national elections garner a lot of attention, civics extends far beyond the voting booth to engagement in one’s community, volunteering, participating in group activities, serving in the military, building knowledge on important issues, and more. The PBS LearningMedia Civics Collection offers virtual learning resources by topic and skill for students in all grades. Additional resources are available via iCivics.

For teachers, PBS LearningMedia is also hosting a free webinar, “America 250: Engaging Students with History, Media & Civic Voice,” on Wed., Mar. 11 at 5 p.m. MST. This presentation will feature classroom-ready civics resources in a fast-paced virtual resource slam and Q&A. The Civic Learning Week National Forum, “Liberty and Learning: Civic Education at 250,” will also be available via livestream. Register for the livestream here.
