Episode 08
This time, Jax from the KIDS team tells a story. She talks about organizing the RMPBS KIDS Día de los Abuelos event in Pueblo.
Why the The Joy of Abuelos y Cultura?
A Message from Jax:
"When I think about my grandparents, among many things, I am grateful for Carmen and Jesus Unzueta giving me the gift of speaking Spanish. As a girl, I learned the language from them when they took care of me while my mom and dad worked.
My parents grew up during a time when children were punished for speaking Spanish in school. Just one generation later, my job includes centering the importance of authentically honoring language and culture through our RMPBS KIDS work.
So, when our team began to create a Día de los Abuelos event, my treasured memories of Carmen and Jesus were at the forefront of my mind, along with the heritage that Luis & Ruth Armendariz passed on to me too. As a Chicana, I choose to honor the different aspects of my heritage which includes Mexican American ancestors, as well as ancestors indigenous to North America, and even a great-grandfather from Japan."
