DENVER — Colorado's First Gentleman Marlon Reis, who had tested positive for COVID-19 along with Governor Jared Polis, was released from the hospital December 8, according to the governor's office.

“I am so thankful to the doctors, nurses, and staff and for the support and well wishes we have received from friends, neighbors, and Coloradans during this time,” Reis said in a statement. “I hold everyone who has been affected by this deadly virus in my heart. Jared and I continue to encourage our fellow Coloradans to remain vigilant, wear masks, stay six feet apart, avoid gatherings, and wash your hands regularly.”

Reis was admitted for treatment Sunday, December 6, after his COVID-19 symptoms worsened. He experienced a worsening cough and shortness of breath.

Governor Polis drove Reis to the hospital "as a precaution." The governor himself is not experiencing any additional symptoms. They traveled in a personal vehicle to and from the hospital.

Reis did not require any supplemental oxygen at the hospital, but received dexamethasone to treat inflammation and remdesivir, an antiviral drug used to treat COVID-19 (according to a trial from the World Health Organization, remdesivir has "no meaningful effect" in COVID-19 patients).

"My doctor suggested that as a precaution I go to the hospital, so a few hours ago Jared drove me to the hospital where I was admitted and am now being closely monitored," Reis wrote on Facebook. "In addition to your kind thoughts and prayers for me and everyone else afflicted by this horrible virus, please be extra careful to avoid getting it. Wearing a mask properly reduces your risk by half! Also, make sure to avoid social gatherings (right now one in forty Coloradans are contagious with Coronavirus) and keep a distance from others."

Polis announced Saturday, November 28 that he and Reis tested positive for COVID-19.

They have been isolated for 10 days.

The governor's positive test result came just two days after he announced that he would isolate after being exposed to someone who later tested positive for COVID-19. His first COVID-19 test after that initial exposure did come back negative.

Neither Polis nor his office have publicly confirmed how or where the governor may have contracted the virus.

"No person or family is immune to this virus," Polis said in a statement. "I urge every Coloradan to practice caution, limit public interactions, wear a mask in public, stay six feet from others and wash your hands regularly."

As of December 6, over 260,000 Coloradans have tested positive for COVID-19. There have been 3,356 deaths among those cases. More COVID-19 data specific to Colorado is available here.
