Medicare Advantage: Find The Best Possible Plan

share

If you’re one of the thousands of Montanans enrolled in Medicare, you may start getting deluged with marketing pitches for what’s called Medicare Advantage Plans.

Medicare’s annual open enrollment period begins October 15 and ends December 17. Legacy SCL Health hospitals, now Intermountain Healthcare, are contracted with all Medicare Advantage payers in the state.

Medicare Advantage appeals to many people, and it’s easy to understand why. Original Medicare doesn’t cover all recipient expenses. Advantage plans have cost-sharing requirements and then cap the out-of-pocket costs. In addition, low premiums and all-in-one coverage make it attractive.

There can, however, be unexpected risks with Advantage plans, especially if you have a significant health issue. The alternative is to go with Original Medicare and add a supplemental, or Medigap, plan that covers out-of-pocket expenses and offers a wide choice of providers. A patient will pay additional monthly premiums for a Medigap policy, and unless you’re enrolling in Medicare for the first time, you might be denied coverage due to a preexisting condition.

Making the right choice for your needs requires research and careful planning, and we encourage all Medicare-eligible patients to take the time to learn the facts. The resources below can help you find the best possible plan.
