National Youth Summit: The Dust Bowl

2012 National Youth Summit: The Dust Bowl

Students from around the state gathered at History Colorado to watch a live webcast featuring award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns and participate in a nation-wide discussion on the environmental issues of today.

The 2012 National Youth Summit on October 17 joined students across the country through a live webcast – this year’s focus was America’s Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The Summit included segments from Ken Burns’s new film, The Dust Bowl, and featured a local panel of experts that connected this piece of history with current issues of drought, sustainability and environmental security.

  • Kristin Maharg, Program Manager at Colorado Foundation for Water Education, talked to the audience about the future of Colorado's water.
  • Adrianne Kroepsch, Graduate Research Assistant at the Center of the American West, educated the crowd on the dangers of "fracking."
  • Ryan Vachon , Director at Earth Initiatives and affiliate with INSTAAR (Institute for Arctic and Alpine Research, University of Colorado), encouraged everyone to think like a scientist.
  • Einar Jensen, Life Safety Educator at South Metro Fire Rescue Authority, discussed the devastating effect of this year's drought and the intense wildfires of the past season.
