Sustainability Issues in Five Points and Beyond
The Five Points neighborhood in Denver was a thriving cultural center for decades, attracting jazz greats like Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington.
While the neighborhood's once vibrant commercial strip has long been in decline, former Gov. Bill Ritter breathed new life into the area in 2010 when he named Five Points a designated sustainable community. The focus now is on bolstering investment in the neighborhood, decreasing abandoned storefronts, increasing energy efficiency, and developing new housing opportunities.
As part three of its Blueprint America initiative, Rocky Mountain PBS is exploring some of the key sustainability issues that Five Points and three other communities designated as part of the Colorado Sustainable Main Streets initiative - Fowler, Monte Vista and Rifle - are facing.
Watch a recent episode below of "Colorado State of Mind," where host Cynthia Hessin and an expert panel discuss the impact of the Main Streets initiative so far on the Five Points neighborhood and beyond.
