High Country News

  • Position Title: Editorial Intern
  • Work Schedule: Mon-Fri, 9-5, 40 hours per week
  • Position Description: Every year, High Country News offers four to six internship positions, each six months long, starting in June and January. 

We provide free housing and a $200-per-week stipend. To help defray moving costs, an additional $500 travel stipend is available upon successful completion of the internship. One exceptional candidate from each session may have the option of staying on another six months as an editorial fellow -- a higher-paid, higher-output position.

Our interns and fellows are a key part of the HCN team; aside from a few minor tasks such as sorting the mail and answering phones, interns spend most of their time researching, interviewing, writing, and developing content -- both for print and online. We pride ourselves on fairness, accuracy and good writing, and we expect no less of our interns.

All interns and fellows work with the staff editors to write news stories for the website and for the newsmagazine, ranging in length from 250 to 1,600 words. Depending on their experience and ability, they may also get the opportunity to write a 2,500- to 5,000-word feature story. Our editing process is rigorous -- all copy goes through two layers of editing and it is not unusual for a story to see six or eight drafts. Reporting is generally conducted over the phone and the Internet, but we do have money to send each intern out into the field at least once to do on-the-ground work.

  • Learning Outcomes: Interns get experience working in a magazine newsroom, hone their writing and reporting skills, and cultivate connections they can rely on later as a freelance or staff journalist.
  • Qualifications: For all of our internship positions, a bachelor's degree or equivalent and some prior journalism experience and/or education is preferred. We also prefer applicants who are familiar with High Country News and who have lived in the West and know its environmental and community issues. Photographic experience and familiarity with audio and visual programs such as Final Cut Pro and Flash, as well as radio or video experience are all pluses. We strongly encourage Native American journalists, Hispanic journalists and those from other under-represented backgrounds to apply.

Grand Valley Public Radio – KAFM 88.1

  • Position Title: Marketing and Outreach Intern
  • Work Schedule: Mondays-Fridays 1-4pm, 15-20 hours per week
  • Position Description: This position will work directly under the Outreach and Event Coordinator on both internal and external events sponsored by KAFM. Events include monthly music concerts in KAFM's Radio Room as well as outreach events throughout the summer at festivals and other opportunities to promote KAFM's brand.
  • Learning Outcomes: Learning outcomes include the ability to plan, promote and implement music and outreach events, including media relations, social media marketing, event logistic planning, effective interaction with contracted bands, musicians and technical support as well as effective public relations outreach strategies at a variety of events and opportunities.
  • Qualifications: Preference is for marketing, business or mass com major. Some experience with writing, social media preferred.

Rocky Mountain PBS 

  • Position Title: Production Intern – Pledge, Promotions & TV Series
  • Work Schedule: Anytime between 9am-6pm, Mondays-Saturdays (per your schedule). Weekly minimum is 4 hours, 300 hour minimum commitment is required.
  • Position Description: The Pledge, Promotions and Series intern reports directly to Director & Executive Producer Julie Speer and aids her with all duties related to pre-production, production and post production. The intern has a desk, phone, email and direct line as well as access to Adobe Premiere Editing suites. 
    • Duties include but are not limited to:
    • Preproduction – 50%
      - Research (for data, photographs, archival footage and other assets and info)
      - Drafting shoot schedule
      - Drafting scripts
      - Prepping tape stock / striping tapes
      - Working with Talent
      - Working with the Live TV show Database (pledge database)
      - Entering air times
      - Preparing “Break Sheets”
    • Production – 15%
      - Assist on field and studio shoots
      - Set up and break down of gear
      - Operating teleprompter or camera as needed
    • Post Production – 25%
      - Digitizing
      - Capturing and sorting footage
      - Sub-clipping and preparing sequences
      - Laying edited projects to tape
    • Special Projects as assigned – 10%
  • Learning Outcomes: This production internship is an excellent way to gain hands on experience at a TV station (with live and taped video productions) as well as experience in the nonprofit sector.
  • Qualifications: 
    • 300 hour minimum commitment required (scheduled as you like)
    • Working knowledge of Premiere a plus
    • Working knowledge of After Affects, Photoshop and/or Illustrator a plus
    • Interest and passion for public television and non-fiction programming
    • Flexible, Independent, self motivated, personable and willing to learn

KRZA Radio Station 

  • Position Title: Music Intern
  • Position Description: Works with Music Director to:
    • Review and process new CDs for airplay, approximately 5-10 per day,
    • Data entry related to previewing and acquisitions,
    • Assist with submissions of required reports: Sound Exchange, CMI, etc.
    • Host music shows occasionally as needed,
    • Assist with Fund Drives and other station activities as needed.
  • Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm. 20-35 hours per week.
  • Learning Outcomes: This intern will be able to:
    • Identify parameters of quality music,
    • Identify music that is appropriate for community radio,
    • Describe differences between music genres and be able to catalogue appropriately,
    • Submit required reports to Sound Exchange, CMI, etc in a correct and timely fashion,
    • Identify and overcome challenges associated with music acquisition and management in a rural, low-income environment.
  • Qualifications: At least two years of college level music courses, a love of all music genres, willingness to learn about new music genres, experience with data entry, experience with or willingness to learn about hosting radio shows.

  • Position Title: News Intern
  • Position Description: Produce 7-15 minute audio stories every day for our daily news program, "A Las Ocho". Interview local citizens and cover local events in a rural, sparsely populated area, including possibly New Mexico. Prepare Community Calendar items for live-read in studios. Prepare an in-depth investigative series about a local issue for our communities.
  • Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm (occasional weekends). 20-35 hours per week.
  • Learning Outcomes: This intern will be able to:
    • Produce quality, timely and appropriate news and information stories.
    • Meet deadlines consistently.
    • Identify and overcome challenges associated with producing news in a rural, low-income environment.
    • Create radio-appropriate scripts for live-reads by local volunteers
  • Qualifications: At least two years of journalism courses, experience with radio broadcasting and audio editing, consistently able to meet deadlines and provide quality product.

KDNK Community Radio

  • Position Title: News Intern
  • Position Description: Assist news department. Reporting, sound gathering, writing, live hosting, editing, web posting and all that comes with being a journalist in a small but focused newsroom.
  • Work Schedule: Flexible
  • Learning Outcomes: Learn teamwork, editing, writing, script reading, recording, interviewing, mixing.
  • Qualifications: Ability to learn and adapt and contribute to the news flow at KDNK. Desire for quality work. Basic knowledge of newsgathering, editing software, journalism ethics and writing for radio.

KAFA Radio

  • Position Title: On Air Personality
  • Position Description: KAFA-FM is offering the unique opportunity to join our on air staff for the summer to gain experience in radio broadcasting. Duties will include On Air as an announcer for regular KAFA programming and also will be working to develop news type coverage of Basic Training at the Academy. 
  • Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 10-2pm, Hours per week - 20
  • Learning Outcomes: This unpaid position will offer the candidate the opportunity to get hands on experience in broadcasting and one on one training with the station manager. Candidates will learn NexGen radio software, one on the most widely used radio software in broadcasting, gain knowledge of programming a radio station and will get experience in audio editing. At the end of the period they will be able to walk away with a working “Air Check” of their on air work on the station.
