4320 America's Byways: Santa Fe Trail http://www.rmpbs.org/content/index.cfm/program/13820 en-us Visit the America's Byways web site In Colorado the 187-mile-long Santa Fe Trail Scenic and Historic Byway parallels the historic 19th century Santa Fe Trail. Starting at the Kansas border, the byway continues southwest and climbs Raton Pass to the New Mexico border. To journey the Santa Fe Trail is to travel the vastness of time, from the age of the dinosaurs to the bustling frontier days at Bent's Fort to the 20th century Dust Bowl and the injustices of a Japanese-American internment camp at Amache. Memories of the past remain strong, but the regeneration of the prairie in Comanche National Grasslands gives hope for the future.
