Watch
some of your childrens favorite shows with them. - Learn
why they like these programs.
- How do these programs coincide
with your value system?
- Discuss your values and those of the
show with your children.

When
viewing a show together, discuss any violence in the show.
- Ask your children how a conflict could have been solved without
violence.
- Let them know how you feel about the way their favorite
television characters solve their problems.

If
you have a VCR or TiVo recording device, record some of your
childrens favorite shows. - When a conflict occurs,
pause the tape and ask your children how the conflict could
be solved.
- Ask them how they would resolve a similar problem
with their peers.
- Ask them to suggest solutions to the conflict
other than resorting to violence.
- Continue the tape, and compare
what happens on the show to what your child suggested as solutions.
- Discuss why the producers of the show have chosen this particular
solution for the conflict shown.

Watch
a "reality" talk show, similar to the Joey Sellar
Show, with your child. - Discuss the guests: are they like
people your child knows?
- How are the guests similar to people
you know and how are they different?
- How are problems solved
on the program?
- Are the guests problems common problems?
- How do they solve these problems?
- Why are these guests selected
to appear on the show? How does the host encourage the guests
to solve their problems?
- What is the hosts motivation-
is it helping the people who come on the show? How do you know?

Discuss
school violence with your child. - Does he/ she feel safe
in their school?
- Does bullying exist?
- Have they ever been bullied?
- Have they ever teased other students?
- How do they feel about
the violence in schools that is plaguing the country?
- By discussing
your childrens fears, you are providing them with an avenue
to discuss problems now and in the future.
