Needs a New Program Distributor: A Simulation |
Situation:
Situation: The Joey Sellar Show has been dropped by its distributor
because it is not "cutting edge." Consequently, the
show is seeking a deal with a new distributor, StarCo. This
distributor is conducting research to determine whether The
Joey Sellar Show will fit with this new distributor's programming
plans.
|
The
Players:
Depending upon the number of students in the class, the teacher
can assign several students to the various roles.
- Joey
Sellar will defend his type of programming and discuss how
it can add value to the distributor, as well as to the average
American's life.
- Joey's
production staff will further attempt to demonstrate Joey's
vision and how it can mean revenue for the distributor.
- The
former distributor's executives will explain why they dropped
the program.
- Former
guest(s) who enjoyed being on the show will explain what
the show meant to them
- Former
guest(s) who regret having been on the show will explain
why.
- Media
watchdog/anti-violence group will discuss the problems the
show causes.
- ACLU/
First Amendment rights protection group will denounce censorship
and present arguments for giving this show its voice on
the air.
- People
in favor of positive American representation on TV will
explain how they feel the show undermines how others view
our country.
- Advertising
executives will explain how advertisers feel about the show.
- StarCo
executives will discuss their vision and revenue model.
The
Process:
The simulation involves three parts.
-
The first is the simulated debate. After being divided
into groups, students are to conduct research about their
characters and prepare short presentations. For those working
in groups (i.e., the distributor executives or production
staff), each student should prepare his/her own piece of
the presentation to ensure that everyone is involved. The
student playing Joey can work with the production staff
but should have slightly different justifications and motives.
The students playing former guests can, within reasonable
guidelines, be creative in coming up with the topic of the
show they were on.
After students have prepared, conduct the debate. First,
those in favor of the new distributor picking up the show
should present their viewpoints. Then, those against The
Joey Sellar Show airing should have a chance to present.
- Stage
two of the simulation involves individual assessment of
the proceedings. After all arguments have been heard,
the students are to leave their roles behind and become
an impartial jury. Each student is to write a short paper
explaining how he/she would vote, based on the arguments
presented. After the assignment has been turned in, the
students reconvene in class.
- The
final stage is the vote, discussion, and analysis. All
those who voted in favor of the show being picked up form
one group, while those against the show form another. Each
group should work together briefly to come up with the major
reasons they voted the way they did and present their findings
to the other half. The whole class can then discuss the
outcomes.
You pick the guests. What follows are five possible topics
for future Joey Sellar shows. As a class, vote on which
ones you would most like to see, as well as which ones you
are most likely to see. Compare and contrast the results.
Why did you select the shows you did? What is intrigueing
about the topics you chose? Why did you think certain topics
were more likely to become shows than others?
- Aliens
abducted my teacher and now she is working for them.
- My
sister starved my guinea pig in a jealous rage.
- My
parents love each other more now than they did when
they got married.
- I
am making the world a better place and I'm only 7.
- I
wish I were a brunette.
