First,
select a favorite commercial that currently airs on television.
-
The commercial should have people in it, preferably not
famous athletes.
- Below
is a list of art works from different time periods and regions.
- Underneath
the title and artist is a Web site where you can view the
work of art.
- Visit
the sites listed, selecting two of the pieces you wish to
use in your project.
- For
each of the pieces you choose, you must redo the commercial
based on the standards of beauty and social values you feel
the art piece depicts.
- For
example, if the figures in the work of art demonstrate voluptuousness,
recast the commercial based on this standard of beauty.
- If
the art work indicates that women are held in high regard,
review the content of the commercial and adjust it as necessary
to reflect these values.
Some
of the Web sites offer more information on the work of art.
You may do further research on the piece if you wish, or you
can allow the artwork to speak for itself. You may use as many
forms of media as are available to you, including story-boarding
the commercial, describing in words the changes you would make,
shooting video, or designing a web site. Be as creative as you
can, but be sure to represent the standards of beauty and societal
values in each work of art. It is up to you to interpret the
works of art; however, be prepared to justify the choices you
make.
After everyone shows the class their commercials, discuss
as a group the challenges you faced.
- Who
decides what current standards of beauty are?
- How?
- Why?
- What
makes something or someone beautiful in one time period
and not in another?
- Does
every society impart its own value system?
- How?
- How
responsible are various forms of media for constructing
the value systems that societies adopt?
