It was an unusual holiday weekend. First came the news of Sen. McCain's selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate. Then, the nation crossed its fingers as Hurricane Gustav approached the Louisiana shoreline. Finally, Sen. McCain suspended most opening-day RNC activities. Now that things are back on track, what are your hopes for the Republican convention? And what do you think of the Palin pick?

Last night, I fell backwards into a ticket to the opening night of the Democratic National Convention. While I didn't manage to get a seat inside the arena, I did laps around the perimeter – and came within 10 feet of former President Jimmy Carter. Two days in and two days to go, what are your impressions of convention week? What have you seen so far? And what do you think of the Biden pick?

I wanted to change the subject this week. I really did. But then I saw Charles McGrath's New York Times editorial – "Is PBS Really Necessary?" – and the comment avalanche that followed on the Times' site. It's at 836 at the moment. (Three cheers for new media – I often enjoy reader comments more than the articles themselves.)

Well, so much for objectivity. For once in my life, I'm decidedly keen on a candidate – made up my mind in the last six weeks – but I can't caucus tonight because I'm registered as an independent. The rule is that you must be registered with a party by December 5, 2007, to participate in a caucus. That's no problem for party-line voters, but for independents, it's a pickle. I can see how frustrating this would be for third party candidates and their supporters.

Lehrer spoke to a packed room at the Pinnacle Club about his career with "The NewsHour," his work moderating presidential debates, his new novel – and even his early days as a Continental Trailways ticket agent in Victoria, Texas.
