Sandra Bonilla Thompson wrote Love, Honor and Cherish, an account of the wartime romance between her parents. It is based on a collection of more than 500 letters written between them from 1942 to 1944. Her father, a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division, was killed in action in Holland on September 22, 1944.

A native Englishwoman and member of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, Barbara Saks spent WWII working in Intelligence at Bletchley Park, the United Kingdom's main top-secret codebreaking establishment. During the Blitz, German pilots bombed her house, leaving only a skeleton frame. Barbara came to America in 1946 to be with her husband.
