Jazz and classical bassist Charles Burrell, 88, was awarded a 2008 Mayor's Award for the Excellence in the Arts last month. Often referred to as the Jackie Robinson of classical music, Burrell joined the Denver Symphony in 1949 and helped break the color line in orchestras nationwide. In "Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North," the descendants of the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history retrace their ancestors' slave trade route from Rhode Island to Ghana to Cuba. Their journey is a bold first step and the start of an important conversation. One of the places they visit is Elmina Castle, a former slave fort along Ghana's Atlantic coastline. It is a place I have been to – and will stay with me forever.

People, I love all 115 of you who braved that awful weather Wednesday night to join us for our January ITVS Community Cinema screening of "Banished." I had friends/coworkers who reluctantly came to the screening because they knew the subject matter would be difficult, and it was. But, thanks to a powerful and insightful discussion with our panel, there was some hope in the air as we said our last goodbyes.
