Last year a group of donors asked me why they should give to Rocky Mountain PBS before giving to a food bank. I'll admit that it was a tough question to answer. My response was that you need both - no one should have an empty stomach or an empty mind.
Rocky Mountain PBS's role is to educate and enlighten 24/7, and we do it well, but I knew we could do more.
That meeting really stuck with me and as we started getting ready for December pledge, I discovered KQED-FM in San Francisco was partnering with a local food bank to create a special pledge level. I asked my membership team to find a way for us to do something similar that could reach the entire statewide viewing audience, and make a significant community impact.
They did.
Rocky Mountain PBS is teaming up with Feeding Colorado, an organization representing food banks across our state. As many of you have found, you can become a Rocky Mountain PBS member at the $120 pledge level, but in lieu of the standard book, DVD or CD thank you gift, you instead feed a family of four for a week.
We now are feeding 64 families a week! Please help us reach even more.
It's an opportunity to support your station and your community. Rocky Mountain PBS strives to make a difference in our state, and we're excited to find a way to feed the mind and an empty stomach.
You also can consider helping out area food banks in other ways. You will benefit from the experience as much as those you help. It's a wonderful way to show your children the power of helping others and the importance of investing in their community.
What are your thoughts about how to best serve Colorado's hungry? Do you have an experience or memory you'd like to share? We want to hear from you!
