Colorado filmmaker Rich Luckin has produced a great new documentary, "
Packard, An American Classic Car," which airs in two weeks – Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 8pm on Rocky Mountain PBS.
Hey, Colorado Packard owners, we want to see photos of you and your Packard!
Send your photos by Nov. 10 and we'll feature them here!
Colorado Packard owners are excited about the film because it features several local Packards and Packard owners. And there's another local connection: Rich is a member of the Rocky Mountain Packard Club, which has about 60 members in Colorado and Wyoming.
It's been over 50 years since the last Packard was sold, and many young people have never seen a Packard or even heard of one of the finest cars ever manufactured in America. The Packard Motor Car Company built and sold their first car in 1899 in Warren, Ohio, making it one of America's earliest auto companies. Five years later, the company moved to Detroit where they built quality cars until 1956.
Packard was known for building high quality, high-end, trouble-free machines. In the early days of the company, Packard didn't advertise, relying only on word of mouth to sell cars. Their memorable slogan was: "Ask the Man Who Owns One," and the company's confidence in this tagline was supported by the cars they built.
These autos now are highly prized by collectors – in fact, more models of Packards are classified as "classics" by the Classic Car Club of America than any other make. Several of these beauties can be seen in the documentary.
My own connection to Packard started almost 30 years ago when I purchased a 1939 black, four door sedan. This is a wonderful, reliable car that I have driven thousands of miles across the country without any major problem.
The Rocky Mountain Packard Club is affiliated with the
Packard Automobile Classics, a national Packard owners group. The Club organizes a monthly tour so that owners can get their cars out and drive as a group. These tours may just be for a short Sunday drive to a local place of interest or a longer weekend event covering several hundred miles.
Packard owners love their cars and love to drive them. Packards handle well for big cars and ride like a dream. Just what the discriminating owner would demand.
