Colorado in the 1930s
Our dedicated group of volunteers from History Colorado and Rocky Mountain PBS spent countless hours compiling the photos and articles in this online exhibit, helping to paint a picture of life in Colorado during the Great Depression. Enjoy!

I was born in Denver in 1933. The pictures are fascinating. In 1936 my family was involved in a car accident on the west Alameda extension,(as it was known then) rolling end over end 8 times down the side of the mountain. . Miraculously we all survived. A story about the accident was printed in the Denver Post and/or the Rocky Mountain News.. I would so appreciate any help in finding information, or advice on HOW to find the information in the Post or News archives.
Thanks for the memorable pictures.

Thank you for your comment Ms. Wolter. You can go to the Colorado History Museum's Hart Library to search the microfiche files they have of both newspapers. The library may be closed because they are moving their collection to storage while the new facility is built. I do know that research will somehow still be available. Call the CHS and ask for the Hart Library and they can tell you if the newspaper films are still available. You can also contact the Denver Post as they will have a newspaper "morgue" you may be able to look at. Also, contact the main Denver Public Library as they may have sources as well.
Happy hunting!

Thanks for the pictures. My grandmother taught for many years in the Nucla school. I had no idea until now that it was a WPA project. It still stands, but is no longer the high school in the town.
