Rocky Mountain PBS is rolling out an exciting initiative called
"Facing the Mortgage Crisis." It's part of a nationwide information and outreach blitz by PBS stations in partnership with public radio stations. Here in Colorado we've partnered with KUNC, community radio for Northern Colorado, and KUVO, Denver's jazz and public radio station. Together we're working to connect our viewers and listeners to helpful information on what you can do if you're facing financial difficulties with respect to housing and where to go for advice.
We've also partnered with the Colorado Foreclosure Hotline, 877-601-HOPE, a telephone outreach center that directs people to free counseling services in their own communities across the state. The hotline has been in operation since 2006 and has a terrific track record. Four out of 5 people who go through their process experience a positive resolution. Best of all, it's free, confidential and it's available to anyone in any socioeconomic situation.
The fact is, the financial crisis has hit every economic layer of our state. Many of the people who are falling behind financially are people who have done everything right. But life events like job loss, divorce or illness – events that in a strong economy might have been surmountable – have become predictors of financial decline and have left millions at risk of foreclosure. No matter what might lead people to financial distress, the most important thing to do is call for help as soon as you can.
Stay tuned for the messages and stories we'll be broadcasting this summer around "Facing the Mortgage Crisis." Visit
rmpbs.wordpress.com for resources that could help you or someone you know avoid foreclosure and connect with reliable FREE assistance. The earlier help is received, the more options there are available.
How does the problem look from your angle? From your community? Let's get the issues on the table – and learn from each other.
