Lore from the region in ohio where a large band of the shawnee, including Tecumseh and his brother lived, includes a story of a captured euro frontiersman. After escaping the frontiersman was pursued. The most swift runners were sent to recapture him. In the pursuit, the story relates, the escapee led the pursuers to the edge of a deep, wide precipe. Today known as Clifton Gorge. The escapee, seeing the difficulty, ran towards his nemesis, sprinted back towards the ledge of the precipe and cleared the distance across in a single leap. So astonished were the pursuers they relinquished the search. Upon relating the story to the elders, the chief, Tecumseh, made the euro a member of the tribe.
