$4 a gallon has fueled new thinking on energy and paper consumption

Look around any office or home, and it's easy to spot: mounds of paper that are piled so high they look like mini skyscrapers. The average American worker uses about 12,000 sheets of paper per year, according to Worldwatch Institute, an environmental research organization. That's a high-rise of blank sheets four feet tall.

From the response to our recently launched Sustainable Living section at rmpbs.org/green, we know many of you are already taking steps to be more energy efficient and conserve precious resources. Many of you already pay your bills online and receive e-statements rather than paper. And I bet more than a few of you "think before you print" – and use cloth napkins instead of paper.

As we rethink the ins and outs of running a more energy efficient and sustainable organization, we are pleased to introduce an electronic version of Promo, our monthly program guide. You can now opt out of the printed version and download e-promo each month at rmpbs.org/promo. Our goal is to reduce the number of Promo copies we print, decrease postage costs and save trees and energy in the process.

If you've already signed up for e-promo, thanks for leading the way on this. We've been getting some great feedback and want to know what you think.

There are great perks for you, too: Receive program information before the printed version comes out, and enjoy new and exciting features like an at-a-glance calendar of primetime highlights – perfect for your refrigerator or coffee table.

Go to rmpbs.org/promo and download your first issue today. It'll be years before we all go totally paperless, but getting e-promo is a great place to start.

After you've had a chance to look it over, let us know what you think. What should our next step be? E-promo is a work in progress, and we hope you'll help us grow the publication and help save trees in the process.

I'm a paper person who is really trying to make the switch to electronic everything. It's hard not to click the "print" button for a record but I'm working on it. At first glance, epromo looks great. Definitely something I can use during the day to see what's on tonight.

You are right: It probably will be years before we go totally paperless, but those who are interested can take small steps right now to work toward a larger goal. Thank you for offering e-promo. I'll try it out.

Sign me up for online PROMO and discontinue sending the magazine. It makes sense.

I was wondering why you had not gone to e-mailing Promo. Congratulations on the decision.

I will give a paperless Promo a chance even through I need some sort of "AA" group to give me strength to give up my stack of paper magazines stuffed in my night stand.

Good idea. Sign me up. Some thoughts - to the extent possible, make sure it doesn't look like spam to the major filters out there. Send me a separate notification the first time, so I can fix my spam filters.

One more thing - make it accessible through your Web site in case I lose it.

Thanks to everyone for your interest in e-promo. One point of clarification: If you'd like e-promo e-mailed directly to you each month - and if you are a member and want to start getting e-promo instead of the printed version - please go to rmpbs.org/promo and complete the form. You don't have to be a member to receive e-promo each month, but we need your contact information to be placed on the e-mail list. For those of you who left comments asking that we sign you up, we will try and honor your request if we can find your contact info in our system.

We'll miss the Promo, but have to admit I enjoy the weekly e-mail reminders, and hardly ever open Promo after the day it comes. Let's do e-mail and save us all some paper to dispose of.

I rely on the weekly e-program guide most of the time. I think it's a great idea to dispense with the paper version of Promo. The less paper produced and hauled to the landfill, the better.

Though I hate to admit it, paper is made from trees, and trees fix carbon dioxide. As long as paper is made from well managed forests, enough of our wild forests are left intact, and the paper is recycled, paper use effectively fixes CO2 and should mitigate climate change. So, I think people should give some thought before embracing extremes of anything (e.g., print everything vs. everything electronic).
