Rosemary Casey Winter, an Army nurse in training during World War II, read these entries and wrote in to express her thanks for 'the excellent, truthful, realistic portrayal of WWII.' She recounts her loved ones' experiences during World War II in the following letter:
Thank you for the excellent, truthful, realistic portrayal of WWII.
I was a Cadet Army Nurse in Training V.J. Day in Chicago. My sister worked in a ammunition plant in Kansas. All of my high school class (boys) were drafted or joined the military. My future husband was in the Marines. He and his brother served on all the islands and survived. My brother-in-law drove a tank thru Germany--died at 52 of cancer. One [...] fellow with the Air Force was with the crew shot down and executed by the Japanese. A husband in my later life bombed Germany at night and picked up dead bodies that floated into Sicily, where they were based, in the day time.
Buddy, my childhood friend, went down with a ship. One woman's husband was never found.
They attacked us! I hope our younger people will try to understand.
Germany was grossly overpopulated. They suffered too, The Russians were mean.
Thanks again.
