"At its heart, 'Between the Folds' is a film about potential. The potential of an uncut paper square. The potential of a wild scientific idea. The potential to see things differently." --Vanessa Gould, director
Think origami is just paper planes and cranes? "Between the Folds," an award-winning documentary, introduces us to a group of artists and theoretical scientists who have abandoned careers and hard-earned graduate degrees to forge unconventional lives as modern-day paper-folders. They are reinterpreting the world in paper, creating a wild mix of sensibilities towards art, science, creativity and meaning.
The film explores the process that results in beautiful and unique objects. And threaded throughout is a discussion of the general issues underlying all forms of artistic expression: process versus product, technique versus emotional expression and simplicity versus complexity. The artists weigh in on these issues, and their work ultimately serves as their answer.
The film also reveals origami's connections beyond art – to math, science and engineering – and its use as an educational and research tool in those fields.
Discover for yourself the creative process and discover a new world – and join the discussion.
