Rocky Mountain PBS has selected the Fleming School in Fleming, Colo., as the winner of a $2000 Celestron Telescope. Lisa Chintala, a sixth-eighth grade science teacher and Principal Dustin Seger will be given the telescope on Saturday, Oct. 24 at an event celebrating Fall Astronomy Day at Boulder's Fiske Planetarium.
The contest judges, including an official from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, noted the Fleming School's mission to use the telescope for cross-generational purposes, making it available after school hours. The judges and Rocky Mountain PBS also are pleased that this high-tech tool will be the only of its kind available in the community and will reveal the wonders and mysteries of deep space beyond the Eastern Colorado skies.
The telescope giveaway is part of outreach around the program, "400 Years of the Telescope," in conjunction with the International Year of Astronomy and funded by the National Science Foundation. Celestron is responsible for the telescope donation.
