Rocky Mountain PBS, with a grant from the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Foundation and in conjunction with Ken Burns' "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" series, teamed up with Environmental Learning for Kids (ELK) to offer a group of urban youth outdoor education trips. Eleven junior and senior high school kids from the Denver area participated in a volunteer project on September 26 at Rocky Mountain National Park, celebrating National Public Lands Day. The students repaired a wooden bridge, installed new trail steps and met with a park representative, who spoke about the many career opportunities available through the National Park Service. Afterwards, the group was given special recognition at a National Public Lands Day celebration and film screening held at the Colorado Chautauqua in Boulder in front of an audience of more than 900 people.
