Rocky Mountain PBS salutes Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Here's our lineup of related programming in May:
"Independent Lens: Wings of Defeat"
When director Risa Morimoto learned that her uncle trained as a Kamikaze pilot during his youth but carried that secret to his grave, she decided to retrace his footsteps. Through rare interviews with surviving Kamikaze pilots, "Wings of Defeat" explores a complex history of brutal training and ambivalent sacrifice.
Saturday, May 9, 11 p.m. "Simply Ming"
Award-winning chef Ming Tsai offers both the curious beginner and the culinary expert simple solutions for creating easy East-West dishes. Using no more than eight ingredients, Tsai creates a repertoire of flavor-packed sauces, rubs, spices and vinaigrettes that serve as the foundation for quick but delicious dinners.
Saturdays, May 9 and 23, 12:30 p.m. "Dances of Life"
This performance documentary reveals the cultural history and diversity
of the Pacific Islands through their "dance stories," which for nearly
50,000 years have been an expression of Pacific Islanders' origins,
their journeys, their struggles and their very existence.
Sunday, May 10, 1 p.m. "American Masters: Hollywood Chinese"
From the first Chinese-American film produced in 1916 to Ang Lee's
triumphant "Brokeback Mountain" nine decades later, this program
examines how Chinese people have contributed to and been portrayed in
an industry that was often ignorant about and dismissive of race. Wayne
Wang, Joan Chen and Amy Tan, among many others, share their experiences
of being "the other." These storytellers and film clips from more than
90 films – some dating back to the 1890s – weave a rich tapestry and
complex history.
