Changing the Culture of Sexual Harassment
The Mask You Live In Poster

Community Screenings:

Considering the recent slate of sexual harassment cases within the media, Rocky Mountain PBS is working to provide special community programming that invites thoughtful conversation about this complex issue.

To begin this dialogue, RMPBS will screen Jennifer Newsom’s powerful documentary, The Mask You Live In, in Grand Junction, Colorado Springs, Durango, and Denver.

This film explores how our cultural definitions of masculinity itself may be a key component driving the proliferation of harassment against women. We’ll follow each of these screenings with a moderated discussion about how harassment is affecting our communities.

We hope you’ll join us to participate in this important conversation.

The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America's narrow definition of masculinity.

FILM SYNOPSIS:

Pressured by the media, their peer groups, and even the adults in their lives, our protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes
interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become “real” men.

Experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media also weigh in, offering empirical evidence of the “boy crisis” and tactics to combat it.

The Mask You Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men.
