Mali to Egypt
Dan is in Africa, â??the most beguiling and enchanting of continentsâ??. It is in Mali, west Africa, once a mighty trading empire that extended across west Africa as far as the Atlantic coast, that he finds the first of his treasures, the extraordinary Djenne mosque, which is the largest mud building in the world. The search continues west to Songo and Africaâ??s most isolated tribe, the Dogon, and their breathtaking circumcision paintings. The Dogon mask once inspired Picasso to paint. Dan tries his luck at bartering for a mask at the local market. He then heads North to Libya, where he identifies with Lawrence of Arabia rather than Colonel Gaddafi, to see the lost Roman city of Leptis Magna. In Egypt, Dan heads for the Great Pyramid, but thereâ??s a major setback when the electric lights go out while he is in its deepest chamber. Once he finds his way out, a trek across the Libyan desert awaits. He also discovers the worldâ??s simplest ventilation system and finishes the show with a trip down the Nile.
