Episode #2002
Itâ??s north to Alaska where we start our tour at legendary bar, Chilkoot Charlieâ??s, where we meet our cabbie Larry Reed who is a full-fledged, albeit part-time gold miner who knows 27 blackbears by name at his cabin in the woods. Larry explains how the city got its name, spots the first seagull (a harbinger of spring), and takes us to meet the unofficial mascot of Anchorage, a pet reindeer named Star. In Hobart, Tasmania, an island state off the southeastern tip of Australia, we learn the ABCâ??s of â??Tassie.â?Ì A is for apples, the islandâ??s biggest export. B is for the oldest continuously operating brewery in Australia, which uses all home-grown ingredients. C is for the convicts who originally settled this place. At the historic Richmond Gaol, we can well imagine the horrors inflicted at the â??Flogging Yard.â?Ì We meet some orphaned kangaroos and wombats, and experience the most intriguing attraction, a Tasmanian Devil.
