Sandias Beautiful, awe-inspiring, humbling, ever-changing and timeless, the granite and limestone rock formations of New Mexico's Sandia Mountains dominate the landscape east of Albuquerque. The mountain range stands as a monument to wildness - a refuge, an oasis and a source of life for the region's diverse wild and plant life. "Sandias" underscores the role of this natural treasure in fostering civic pride in and a sense of community for the people of Albuquerque. Historians and archeologists discuss the distinctive geological features, fascinating ecology and rich history of the Sandia Mountains. Geologist Sean Connell's 3-D animations illuminate billions of years of New Mexico's ancient past; author Mike Smith shares poignant stories of Native American families and colonial settlers and field guide and author Robert Julyan points out the food habits and physical characteristics of local wildlife. The program also follows environmental lighting designer Jito Coleman as he creates an unprecedented lighting show at the mountain's summit - 5, 000 feet above sea level - for Albuquerque's Tricentennial celebration.
