Homework Hotline 2009
Episode #141
"Homework Hotline" is the popular 30-minute live, call-in program broadcast from the studio of KTSC-TV Rocky Mountain PBS which is located on the Colorado State University-Pueblo campus. The show airs weekdays at 4:30 p.m. during the nine-month academic school year, September through May. "Homework Hotline" has been helping to educate southern Colorado students since 1995.
This fun, interactive program is designed to help students with their homework questions in the areas of math and science, although other subject questions are accepted. Math problems are visually solved with the teacher explaining steps, while working the problem on a whiteboard. Several science-related demonstrations are also presented and special animal "guests" from the Pueblo Zoo often stop by for the show. Viewers call in from Canon City, Colorado Springs, Pueblo as well as outlying southern Colorado areas, and viewers range in grade level from kindergarten through college. The two hosts for "Homework Hotline" are teachers from Pueblo school districts, each with a math or science emphasis.
In addition to answering homework questions, trivia prizes are also awarded. These prizes are given to the first caller who provides the correct answers to the daily "Secret Word" and the weekly "Brainteaser." Questions for these prizes incorporate academics as well as current events, with prizes including tickets to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, McDonald's coupons, Estes model rockets and more.
"Homework Hotline" is produced and crewed by KTSC-TV staff members and a stellar group of students from the Mass Communications Department with Colorado State University-Pueblo and Pueblo Community College. Homework Hotline is the only live, daily television program broadcast in southern Colorado that is not a local news format.
"Homework Hotline" was recognized with the 2006 Certificate of Merit for "Best Single Program" by the Colorado Broadcasters Association's Awards of Excellence.
