Canadian Adventure Lodges
The journey begins on the west coast of British Columbia in the Great Bear Rainforest at the King Pacific Lodge, a floating three-story luxury resort moored on an island where the nearest road ends 150 miles away. The lodge's isolation yields the opportunity to see one of the rarest animals on the planet: the white-colored Kermode, or "Spirit Bear." Further east, in Alberta's rocky mountains, is Sundance Lodge, accessible only by horseback, and a site where some of the last real cowboys share stories of early riders who struck off from the known line of Canada's first transcontinental railway into this vast and uncertain territory. Eastern Canada also has its share of isolated adventure destinations, including La Seigneurie du Triton, a late- 1800s fishing club that once hosted prestigious guests such as Harry Truman, Theodore Roosevelt and former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Guests tour the area on Rabaskas, large Indian canoes, take guided expeditions in search of wild mushrooms and learn the elegant art of fly-casting.
