Community Service and Volunteering:
With most schools closed, the summer months are an excellent time for students and families alike to answer President Bush's call to service and give back to their community. What better way to spend that time than volunteering in your community and helping your fellow citizen. The President announced in his 2005 State of the Union Address that he is committed to helping our nationâ??s youth reach their full potential by becoming active and civic-minded, healthy adults, and he has acted on his promise. In conjunction with the initiatives undertaken by the USA Freedom Corpsâ??an organization the President created to build on the countless acts of service, sacrifice, and generosity that followed September 11thâ??Mrs. Laura Bush has designed and implemented a character education and youth development effort known as the Helping Americaâ??s Youth initiative. Helping Americaâ??s Youth is a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the challenges facing our youth, particularly at-risk boys, and to motivate caring adults to connect with youth in three key areas: family, school, and community. These initiativesâ??along with other effective community service and volunteerism programsâ??particularly those that are school-based and linked to student performanceâ??will be featured in this program.
