The Way We See It: What Makes a Teacher Worth List
All too often, schools are highlighted for their shortcomings and failures. Those involved in solving this ongoing problem should listen to what students themselves have to say. Youth filmmakers were asked to write, shoot, edit and produce short documentaries about what they think makes a great teacher. In the tradition of masterful storytelling, their work is crafted to inform the viewer of the key attributes necessary to engage students. One piece depicts how two Oakland public school teachers transfer their knowledge into interactive teaching techniques that create a successful learning experience. On the East Coast, a French teacher shows how to grab students' attention. In Utah, students mix experiences of teachers with the products of their learning to create a short that tells viewers about diverse learning styles and engages them in the learning process. The Educational Video Center in New York City "saved" Gerardo Vargas, a.k.a. "Promise," a gang member and high school drop-out. After unhappy stints at various schools he enters a small alternative school and soars to academic and creative success. These documentaries serve as testimony that students care about their education and their teachers, and are the keys to unlocking the closed doors of our failing system.
