Sounds and Symbols
Annette Bening, Academy Award-nominee and mother of four young readers, hosts the second episode, which focuses on the two skills every child needs to decode the printed word: phonemic awareness (understanding that words are made up of individual sounds representedby letters) and phonics (learning the relationship between particular letters and their sounds). This episode profiles teachers using innovative strategies to help kids crack the code of reading. This episode features the legendary Lab School in Washington, DC, which specializes in teaching students with learning disabilities, and Mark Hopkins Elementary School in Sacramento, California, which has a multicultural potpourri of students. This episode includes a segment on Norman Bridwell, creator of "Clifford the Big Red Dog," who – having sold more than 85 million books – has turned two generations of children into avid readers.
