Denali, En Plein Air
Three nationally acclaimed plein air artists, Matt Smith, of Scottsdale, Arizona, Kenn Backhaus of Robesonia, Pennsylvania, and Jean LeGassick, of Silver City, Nevada, paint Mt. McKinley and the expansive landscape of Denali National Park, Alaska. The first of three episodes filmed in Alaska features Matt Smith. Following a brief introduction and explanation of "plein air" by host, Bob Flick, viewers join Smith for a brief painting demonstration and a glimpse into the training, technique and thought processes necessary to paint a successful plein air painting. Plein air painting, past and present, is presented with a look at the art of mountaineer and artist George Brown and the paintings he created while climbing Mt. McKinley in 1947 with the Bradford Washburn Mt. McKinley Expedition. On a rare, glorious September afternoon, under perfect weather conditions, the artists experience and share their emotional response to the "Great One," Mt. McKinley, as they rush to capture the magic of the moment in the fleeting light of the day. The adventure and risks of painting in the wild are brought to "bear," when a blond grizzly arrives uninvited and sends the artists scurrying.
