Laura and Mike have spent the night together for the first time. Mike has to go to work early next morning and Laura, who is irritable in the mornings, snaps at him. Mike had hoped that the awkwardness between himself and Laura would vanish when they had made love, but Laura is tense: she is anxious in case Mike, like other men in her life, might not want to meet her again after becoming her lover. These fears are allayed when Mike arranges to meet her for lunch that day, but when he telephones to cancel the lunch because of a business meeting, Laura is offended and miserable. Laura, having by chance seen Mike going to lunch with an attractive woman, decides that she will go out with a man named Harry.
