Omara Portuondo
Series Info & Airtimes

Born in Havana in 1930, "Omara Portuondo" began her career in the cabarets of that city, not the least of which was the famed Tropicana. Although she toured internationally, her second trajectory to international stardom was launched with the 1996 landmark Buena Vista Social Club album and documentary. This 2005 Montreal Jazz Festival performance springs from her 2000 solo album of the same name. "Omara Portuondo" captures the feel of a long-ago night in the tropics featuring Omara and her all-star Cuban band, elegantly supported by I Musici de Montreal, a 16-piece string orchestra that discreetly underscores the romantic component of her timeless repertoire.
