Health Seekers
In search of pristine air and healing waters, consumption (TB) sufferers pour into Rocky Mountain towns. The time is the early 1800's. Sanitariums, sleeping porches, and tent colonies spring up much to the chagrin of residents who fear the tide of "incurable invalids and imported corpses." Many get well and like Helen Hunt Jackson, Dr. Susan Anderson, Robert Speer, J. J. Hagaman stay on to become major figures in taming of the frontier. In Denver, the National Jewish Center plays a significant role in the treatment of consumption.
