Laura and Mike meet by chance a bore called Harry, who invites them to a party at his home that evening. Mike confides to Laura that because he is lonely and is rarely invited to parties, he always accepts any invitation. Laura tells him scornfully that she has no intention of going to Harry's party, but betrays by sudden tears that she feels her loneliness too. Mike offers to take her out to dinner instead of the party. At the restaurant there is a commotion because Laura has lost a valuable contact lens on the floor. Mike bravely insists that the maitre d'hotel must hold up the business of the restaurant so that the lens is not trodden on. When the lens is found, the matre d'hotel asks Mike and Laura to leave and, to Laura's annoyance, Mike meekly complies. They go back to Laura's flat, but Mike is discouraged and leaves. Neither of them expects to see the other again.
