Back to School: Empowering Parents,
Before the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001(NCLB), parentsā?? especially those of modest meansā??were often relegated to the education sidelines. Now, with the advent of a new school year under the landmark education reform law, parents have a wider array of choices and options than ever before to ensure their children receive a world-class education. From detailed school report cards, to before-and after-school tutoring, to unprecedented school choice options, No Child Left Behind is putting parents in the driverā??s seat and equipping studentsā??especially those who need help the most for future success. The law makes it simple for families, and makes it clear for educators: when schools do not meet childrenā??s basic educational needsā??keeping them safe and helping them to learn reading, math and science at grade level, parents need alternatives. They need access to and information about the educational choices and options available throughout the district, including transferring to a better performing public school or obtaining supplemental services, to ensure greater student success.
