Guantanamo to Pinar Del Rio
It is now 40 years since Castro's revolution and, because of sanctions, Cuba's infrastructure is crumbling. The trains certainly don't run on time. Despite this, celebrity writer, actor and quizmaster Nick Hancock decides to cross the country by rail, only to have his plans disrupted by the arrival of Hurricane George. Stranded at Guantanamo, Nick acts like a Cuban and improvises. Instead of traveling on a fractured innercity network, he gets around the island on steam-driven freight trains that normally transport sugar; hitches a lift on the Hershey chocolate train, and tries an assortment of other vehicles, including stretch Ladas and bicycles powered with lawnmower engines. Along the way, Nick meets up with boxers, ballet dancers, faded divas, fickle dolphins, cigar rollers and revolutionaries old and new.
